STANDARDS

ASTM International (www.astm.org), originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), provides certification standards for structural steel under the registered ASTM trademarks designated by the letter A, as in A514. Steel plate standards, in particular, are in volume 01.04 of the ASTM manual of standards. Some of these standards are listed below:

“Standard Specification for General Requirements for Rolled Structural Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling” This standard sets out the general requirements and related definitions governing the delivery of structural steel conforming to other ASTM standards. These requirements include variations in dimensions, chemical analysis, marking, repair of defects, and methods and frequency of testing.

“Standard Specification for Carbon Structural Steel”
This standard covers carbon steel shapes, plates and bars of structural quality for use in riveted, bolted or welded construction with yield point strengths of 36,000 psi (250 MPa).

“Standard Specification for High Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel”
This standard covers high strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates and bars for use in riveted, bolted or welded construction with yield point strengths from 42,000 psi (290 MPa) through 50,000 psi (345 MPa). The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel is intended to be better than that of carbon structural steel.

“Standard Specification for High-yield-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate, suitable for welding”
This standard applies to quenched and tempered steel plate in thicknesses of 6″ and under and sets out requirements that govern tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, chemical composition and acceptable heat treatment parameters. Our HS 100 grade includes steels of this type.

“Standard Specification for High Strength Low-Alloy Columbium-Vanadium Structural Steel”
This standard covers five grades of high strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates and bars for use in riveted, bolted or welded construction with yield point strengths of 42,000 psi (290 MPa) under Grade 42; 50,000 psi (345 MPa) under Grade 50; 55,000 psi (380 MPa) under Grade 55; 60,000 psi (415 MPa) under Grade 60; and 65,000 psi (450 MPa) under Grade 65.

“Standard Specification for High Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel With 50,000 psi (345 MPa) Minimum Yield Point”
This standard covers high strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates and bars for use in riveted, bolted or welded construction with minimum yield point strengths of 50,000 psi (345 MPa). The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel is intended to be better than that of carbon structural steel. This steel is available in four different chemical compositions, designated Grade A, B, C and K.

“Standard Specification for Hot-Rolled Structural Steel, High Strength Low-Alloy Plate with Improved Formability”
This standard covers two chemistry types (type 3 and type 7) and four grades of high strength low-alloy structural steel plates, with yield point strengths of 50,000 psi (345 MPa) under Grade 50; 60,000 psi (415 MPa) under Grade 60; 70,000 psi (485 MPa) under Grade 70; and 80,000 psi (550 MPa) under Grade 80.
